The DJI Intelligent Flight Battery for Phantom 3 is a 4480-mAh, 15.2 V lithium-polymer battery designed for the Phantom 3 series. This battery is the same battery that comes with the Phantom 3 series of quad copters. It features four LEDs that display remaining battery capacity. Power management is handled internally meaning the battery doesn't require a separate balance lead to control charging.
User Experience :
The technology of Li-Po batteries are a bit different than what you might have had in the past. Li-Po's do not like to be stored or unused "fully" charged or discharged. If you are not going to used your batteries for awhile or if they are being stored, keep them charged at about 30%. Fully charge them before use and try to avoid total discharge while in use.
Battery is fantastic. It lasts about 21 minutes depending on how fast you are flying. With the high speed charger, it takes about an hour to fully charge the battery.
***First and foremost: Follow the 10 for 10 rule for new batteries: for every new battery, fly only 10 minutes for the first 10 flights, this will properly condition the battery and extend its life***
I was on the fence about 4 vs 5 stars, and the only reason for that is the price. I settled on 5 stars because in the end, i want to have a battery that i trust will keep my $1400 bird in the air, and if it costs a bit more for that reliability, i'm fine with it. Realistically i feel like they should be in the 99-$129 range and people wouldn't be as flabbergasted. Thoughts otherwise:
-The battery itself feels well made, i like that it fits tightly, but does take some effort to eject.
-I like that it is caged with plastic to prevent accidental damage
-I like that the meter is super bright and easy to see
-I'm not crazy about the latch, but it does feel secure.
-The charging time is impressively fast.
The other thing i think people should realize is that there's also circuitry built into the battery, and i expect that of course adds to the cost. Part of the 'smart-ness' of the battery is that after a set number of days it will start to discharge itself. This is a feature to keep the battery healthy, since unlike lithium ion, lithium polymer is best stored partially discharged.
Even if a third party came out with a cheaper alternative, i would NOT be a first buyer of that, i would wait for a lot of others to verify the reliability before daring to try it myself. I'm usually very into trying out alternatives, but in this case it could literally blow me out of the sky if it turns out to be a dud.
